1884-S $5 MS64 PCGS. Jeff Garrett and Ron Guth assert that the San Francisco Mint half eagles are among the more undervalued U.S. gold coins. They state that the 1884-S "is moderately scarce in all grades, becoming quite rare in the higher states of preservation." This piece was set aside for obvious reasons having to do with its exceptional visual appeal. The surfaces are deep reddish-gold and the fields are bright with a confirmed reflectivity. Fully struck also. No one wants to be the underbidder on this one, because it could be years before we offer another at auction that is graded this highly.
