1884-S<$20> MS65 NGC. 1884 was a typical year for double eagle production at San Francisco. 916,000 pieces were struck, and since these were used as bank reserves both in the United States and abroad, it is not surprising that the date is relatively plentiful in bagmarked Mint State. In 1884, however, perhaps not a single numismatist was attempting to form a high grade date and mintmark set of double eagles. Thus, Uncirculated examples were regarded merely as bullion, and were loosely stored for decades. Somehow this gorgeous orange-gold Gem passed through the years without receiving any relevant marks. The cheek is particularly smooth. In addition, the luster is dazzling and the strike is exemplary. One of only four pieces graded MS65 by NGC, with none finer. PCGS has certified no examples above the MS64 level (9/06).
