1884$1>--Rim Clipped Planchet--PR65 Cameo PCGS. To error collectors--and perhaps to some Morgan dollar collectors--proof Morgan dollars must be viewed as the crme de la crme of collecting. If proof Morgans are rare, which they indubitably are, then proof Morgan errors are immeasurably rarer. The present coin is such a "blue moon" coin: It not only is a lovely, well mirrored and thickly frosted proof dollar, but it is also a naked-eye error coin, showing a visible rim clip at 2 o'clock on the obverse, and correspondingly at 4 o'clock on the reverse. The PCGS slab obligingly spells out "Mint Error--Rim Clipped Planchet," just in case someone might not pick up the error at first glance (which is doubtful). A light tinge of amber and blue graces the obverse periphery, and the perspicacious viewer may also detect the faintest hint of pale lilac on the reverse. PCGS has graded four examples of this issue in PR65 Cameo, with two finer--although those other pieces are likely not errors (9/06).
