1884-S$1 MS64 NGC. Despite a substantial mintage of 3,200,000 coins, the 1884-S Morgan Dollar is a condition rarity that is seldom seen in Mint State, and almost never in Choice quality. In fact, PCGS and NGC have combined to certify just two dozen MS64 examples, as well as four finer coins. More so than any other issue, mintage of the individual Morgan Dollar dates is completely unrelated to rarity. For some issues, substantial portions of the original mintage went into storage, eventually being transferred to the Treasury in Washington, D.C. Other issues saw most or all of the original mintage placed into circulation almost immediately after production. Such was the case with this 1884-S issue.
Both sides of this Choice Mint State dollar are brilliant with silvery-white color and wisps of golden toning only along the borders. The obverse is fully prooflike with noticeable cameo contrast. The reverse has frosty silver luster. A small chatter-mark on Liberty's cheek is all that keeps this from Gem quality. Sharply struck and very will made, it is an outstanding and extremely important dollar. Population: 13 in 64, 1 finer (1/05).
From The Dr. Volker Dube Collection. Lot:7235
