1884-S $1 MS61 NGC. Beginning in 1878 the San Francisco Mint made large totals of beautifully produced Morgan dollars, continuing in an unbroken run through 1882 and generally on the order of 9 million to 12 million coins per year. In 1883, however, the S-mint emission dwindled to 6.25 million, dropping even further the following year, to 3.2 million dollars. The 1884-S is the first truly elusive Mint State San Francisco Morgan dollar, although even 1883-S dollars in Mint State can be pricey. This example offers lustrous silvery surfaces with glints of gold on the obverse, while the reverse displays bolder color in amber hues. The strike is typically soft on the hair above the ear and on the eagle's breast, but contact marks are fewer and less severe than might be expected for the grade.

Coin Engraver: George T.
