1884-S $1 MS61 Deep Mirror Prooflike NGC. As late as 2005, in his Guide Book of Morgan Silver Dollars, Q. David Bowers described this issue as "unknown" in Deep Mirror Prooflike, going so far as to describe such a coin as "a Holy Grail in the Morgan series." Yet the facts of numismatics are susceptible to change, and new discoveries can render decades of common wisdom obsolete. Far from being "merely" Prooflike, this coin has powerful, flashy mirrors that unquestionably merit the Deep Mirror Prooflike designation, and the piece stands alone as the only Deep Mirror Prooflike representative ever graded by either NGC or PCGS (5/07).
The 1884-S, while an available issue in circulated grades, becomes distinctly elusive in any Mint State grade. Unlike the famous S-mint issues from a few years before, the vast majority of 1884-S dollars saw considerable circulation, leaving only a handful of unworn survivors. With Mint or near-Mint condition as an inflexible prerequisite for Prooflike status, it is little wonder that few such pieces survive today, and that the survival of a Deep Mirror Prooflike coin would seem impossible.
The surfaces of this distinctive coin exhibit powerful mirrors despite minor haze, and while the piece has little contrast (as Wayne Miller described Prooflike representatives of the issue in 1982), the fields offer reflectivity even at arm's length. The devices have crisp detail overall, with just a touch of the usual weakness present at the hair over Liberty's ear. While the dollar displays a number of scattered abrasions that justify the grade, including a number in the fields and on the lower right cheek, these flaws have surprisingly little impact on the overall eye appeal. A noteworthy example that should appeal to even the most discerning collector of the series.

Shipping: Coins & Currency (view shipping information)
