This is the VAM-6 variety, with the mintmark doubled "with original showing on left side of opening, a spike below the O and line outside the lower left." This repunched mintmark exactly matches the enlarged illustration of VAM-6 in the Van Allen-Mallis book and in The Top 100 guide. The closeup mintmark illustration in the The Official Red Book of Morgan Silver Dollars, although labeled VAM-6 is of a different repunched mintmark variety. In fact, that illustration does not match any of the repunched O mintmark varieties plated in the VAM book for the entire year.
At one time, this was considered the single most common Morgan issue, when all Mint State grades were considered. Today, it is still one of the top five most plentiful issues, although examples at the grade level offered here are nearly impossible to find. In fact, this example is the single finest '84-O Morgan Silver Dollar certified by PCGS. This is an amazing Cameo example with heavily frosty devices and deeply mirrored fields. The surfaces are pristine, and there is no evidence of toning on either side. Population: 1 in 68, 0 finer (1/05).
From The Dr. Volker Dube Collection. Lot:7234
