1884 Kingdom of Hawaii Quarter Overstrike MS63
1884 Kingdom of Hawaii Quarter Overstrike MS63 Uncertified. Unlisted in Gould-Bressett. Presumably struck in .900 silver, 24 mm, 7.5 gm. Statutory weight for standard quarters is 6.25 gm. A mysterious, possibly unique striking from a cut-down Columbian Exposition half dollar. The bases of the host coin's peripheral lettering show clearly on both sides. Traces of die rust are also seen at the margins. A 1963 Coin Galleries "Numismatic Review" that featured an article on the 1884 Hawaiian gold patterns mentions an 1883 Hawaiian silver coin struck over a Columbian half dollar in the legendary Ostheimer Collection. Less than a decade before this informative article was published, one of the many fascinating group lots in "The Palace Collections of Egypt (Farouk)" included Hawaiian pieces, among the items listed a "proof half and quarter dollar, 1884" Was this bizarre fantasy piece struck on the Columbian Exposition grounds for some type of special presentation, or perhaps custom-made at a later date for a king with more money than sense? Spurious or not, a fascinating numismatic item with ties to our 50th state.

Shipping: Coins & Currency (view shipping information)
