“Union Commanders” Meeting President Abraham Lincoln
1884-Dated, Famous Civil War Theme Cabinet Card, Composite Advertising Souvenier Photograph, Entitled “Union Commanders,” together with President Abraham Lincoln, Choice Very Fine.
This 1884 Copywrited original 6.5” x 4.25” Cabinet Card shows a Historic Civil War “Theme” Composite Photographic Image of a seated President Abraham Lincoln flanked by: Admiral David Farragut, General William T. Sherman, General George H. Thomas, General George G. Meade, General/President Ulysses S. Grant, General Joseph Hooker, General Philip H. Sheridan and General Winfield S. Hancock.

General Grant stands to Lincoln’s left and appears in suit and tie rather than uniform. Below the image is printed, “Copyrighted by the Notman Photo Co. Limited, Boston. - With Compliments of the Travelers Insurance Company.” Also, at bottom of card is printed, “Union Commanders. - The Notman Photo Co. Limited. 3 Park St. Boston”. Large backstamp printed in gold ink, “With Compliments of - The Travelers - Life and Accident Insurance Company, - Of Hartford, Conn.” Minor edge rub, overall a truly wonderful and extremely rare image. The best and first we have offered.
Travelers Insurance was founded more than a century ago through an off-hand transaction of only two cents. The two cent incident occurred on March 24, 1864, when a Hartford businessman, James G. Batterson, met a local banker, James E. Bolter, in the post office. Bolter had heard that Batterson and several fellow townsmen were organizing a company for the purpose of introducing accident insurance to North America.
