1884-CC<$20> MS60 PCGS. In 1884, the mintage of Carson City Mint double eagles increased dramatically, with 81,139 pieces coined. At the same time, silver dollars and other gold coins were also being produced, as noted by Rusty Goe: "In 1884, the Carson City Mint reached a creditable level of gold coinage, producing $1.8 million in face value, the fourth highest total between 1870 and 1889. This, of course, occurred during the third consecutive year of steady silver dollar production at the Carson Mint, as throughout 1884, monthly averages for silver dollar mintages ran about 95,000 pieces, added to the approximately 6,500 double eagles struck each month. These quotas combined with the much smaller $10 eagle and $5 half eagle outputs, kept a full crew busy all year." Partly as a result of the increased mintage, this issue is common and available in nearly any desired grade short of Mint State. Even Mint State examples are relatively plentiful, although they are often short on eye appeal. This example is a pleasing piece, with sharp design elements and frosty lemon-yellow luster. The surfaces are lightly abraded, but the degree of eye appeal for the grade is really quite remarkable. Housed in a green label PCGS holder.
From The Wyoming Collection.
