1884 $3 PR66 Deep Cameo PCGS. For a denomination that never achieved widespread appreciation among members of the general public, the three dollar gold piece had gained immense popularity among collectors by the end of its duration. In its last decade of production--the 1880s--the first several years saw steadily increasing proof production (from 36 specimens in 1880 to 89 pieces in 1883) alongside nominal mintages of business strikes. From 1880 through 1886, no year saw production of more than 1,000 circulation-strike three dollar gold coins. Paradoxically, the denomination was at its most popular with numismatists and speculators when production ended in 1889, and one of the Acts of September 26, 1890, closed the door on further issues.
In the context of that decade, one may view the proofs of 1884 as a milestone issue. For the first time since 1861, the year the Civil War drove three dollar gold coins (and virtually all other specie) from circulation in areas east of the Continental Divide, Philadelphia struck over 100 proof examples, and no later issue would fall below its total production of 106 pieces. Across most grades, the 1884 is one of the most available three dollar gold dates in proof format, though collector demand regularly outstrips supply.
This is particularly true for exquisite specimens such as the present coin. Its vibrant mirrored fields are deep orange-gold with hints of amber, while the moderately frosted, boldly impressed devices sport a slightly lighter shade. Excellent contrast for the issue, and immensely desirable as such. Population: 1 in 66 Deep Cameo, 2 finer (1/08).
From The Ultra Collection.

Shipping: Coins & Currency (view shipping information)
