1884 $2 1/2 MS65 Prooflike NGC. A fully struck example of this decidedly low mintage issue, this piece has only minor contact on the fields, visible primarily because of the reflectivity of the fields. Interesting, wispy, vertical die polish lines bisect the reverse on the left side of the eagle; these are strictly of mint origin. Although very scarce in all grades, the 1884 is surprisingly affordable even in Mint State, perhaps because comparatively few numismatists have the temerity to collect the Liberty Quarter Eagle by date. It is the longest-lived gold type since, unlike higher denominations, the motto was not introduced until 1908. As of (1/05), the present Gem is tied with one other piece for the honors of the highest certified commercial strike 1884 Liberty Quarter Eagle. PCGS has not certified any above the MS65 level, and NGC has encapsulated an additional four pieces as MS65 but without a Prooflike designation. Lot:7632
