1884 $10 PR65 Cameo NGC. A pleasing Gem Proof tha
1884<$10> PR65 Cameo NGC. A pleasing Gem Proof that boasts attractive Cameo contrast between the reflective fields and the well frosted devices. This frost continues over the stars, date, lettering and scroll with the characteristic eye appeal that is only found on these rare early gold proofs. The Philadelphia Mint struck a total of 45 pieces to sell to collectors that year, perhaps half of which survive today. Of these, only a few Gems are known, and this is apparently one of the finest to come down through the years. Note the visual appeal when examining this coin, for few possess the classical beauty, technical grade merits or Cameo contrast offered here. For identification purposes we note a very short lint mark tucked into the field between Liberty's hair bun left of the tenth star. On the reverse there is a minute planchet flake residing in the field above TE of TEN and the eagle's center claw above. The surfaces show no signs of mishandling, and there are just a few wispy lines in the fields as seen on virtually all proof gold of the period. A stellar coin for the connoisseur.
We note that PCGS has graded a total of nine examples of this date in Proof, seven as PR64, and two as PR65, one of those is a Deep Cameo. NGC has also graded nine pieces in Proof (all of which are Cameo Proofs), three of which are the equal to this coin, with none seen finer by that service. Certainly not many to choose from, particularly if a coin of Gem quality is desired.
