The mint's production of Proof gold dollars rose to 1,006 pieces in 1884 from only 207 coins the previous year as a few interested collectors began to feverishly hoard the design (possibly in the expectation of this denomination's demise). Although the former mintage figure suggests that the 1884 is an easily obtainable issue, nothing could be farther from the truth. In fact, we believe that no more than 50 to 100 examples of this issue are extant, the majority of which grade lower than this gem Proof 65.
This piece exhibits bright, yellow-gold luster on sparkling, deeply mirrored fields. Close examination reveals the pleasing "orange peel" texture of a gold Proof and there are no post-striking problems to report. A very special offering for the gold enthusiast.
