1883<T$1> PR67 PCGS. As the 1884 and 1885 proof Trade dollars are in the same class as 1913 Liberty nickels--unauthorized and clandestine issues--the 1883 is the last proof issue in the series that is readily collectible, although for a price. The Breen proof Encyclopedia says, "Final year of legitimate issue, and beginning to be coveted as such." (The Breen reference relegates listings of the 1884 and 1885 Trade dollars to its "Restrikes and Fantasy Pieces" section.) This piece is in absolutely top-flight condition for one of the survivors of the original proof mintage of 979 pieces. The beautiful surfaces are essentially brilliant, with just a whisper of gold. Although a flatly struck head and peripheral stars are the rule for this date, this specimen is a pleasing exception that boasts no mentionable strike weakness. A simply immaculate and unimprovable piece, one of four so graded at PCGS with none finer (9/06).
From The Hamburg-Sonoma Collection.
