1883 T$1 PR66 Cameo NGC. This was the final year for official production and sales of Trade dollars, although secret strikings of a few pieces occurred in 1884 and 1885. Mint Director Burchard considered the Trade dollar to be a nuisance, and recommended that the series be discontinued. Perhaps under his influence, President Chester A. Arthur said in his annual address to Congress that "they should no longer be permitted to embarrass our currency system."
President Arthur might have felt differently if he had ever examined this beautiful piece. The glassy fields are watery and deeply mirrored, providing a splendid contrast to the fully struck, richly frosted devices. Fully untoned, with a light touch of cloudiness noted on the lower reverse field, the coin is exquisitely preserved and seems virtually pristine. Of the fifteen specimens currently graded at PR66 Cameo, by NGC (11/06), this is the sole example to receive the "Star" designation as part of its official grade, indicating that this is a coin with extraordinary visual appeal.

Shipping: Coin/Currency (view shipping information)
