1883<T$1> PR65 Cameo PCGS. From 1878 through 1883, and also in 1884 and 1885 according to the dates on the coins, the Philadelphia Mint produced Trade Dollars only in proof condition. While the 1884 and 1885 issues are excessively rare, and probably shouldn't even exist in the first place, this 1883-dated issue is the final obtainable Proof Trade Dollar. Probably at least half of the original production of 979 coins survives to this day, however, few are as nice as this Cameo Gem. In fact, as a general rule, the 1883 Proof Trade Dollars are probably the lower quality of all dates in the series. The present example excepted, of course. This Gem Cameo Proof is a lovely example with bright silver surfaces and excellent contrast. Both sides are ringed by rich peripheral gold toning. The design features on both sides are extremely sharp, and perhaps full. Faint doubling is noted on some of the letters on the reverse, but this is not the doubled die variety mentioned by Bowers. Population: 11 in 65, 7 finer (9/05).
From The Jack Lee Collection, III
