Like the 1884-S, even if to a lesser degree, the 1883-S is a conditionally rare issue. Circulated survivors from the original mintage of 6.2 million pieces are available, a fact that suggests a wide distribution at the time. In Mint State 64, the '83-S is scarce to rare, depending on the particular coin's proximity to a serious buyer. This very choice quality representative is glittering with solid of brightness in the fields and a touch of color at the rim. All features are richly frosted, and the strike is typically sharp for the date, a thankful reminder that San Francisco's mint establishment was top notch in those days. The number of scattered abrasions is not excessive for the assigned grade, in fact, there are very few of them.
