1883-S $10 MS63 NGC. The otherwise orange-gold coloration lightens to golden-rose shades in the center of the obverse. Both sides are sharply struck with bright mint luster that provides memorable cartwheel visual effects as the surfaces rotate under the light. Scattered grade-defining abrasions include several moderate blemishes on the obverse. The 1883-S was produced to the extent of only 38,000 pieces, and the majority of survivors are worn to either the VF or XF level. In terms of total number of coins known, the '83-S is equally as rare as the 1882-S, 1884-S, 1897-S, and 1900-S. We have handled only three MS63 representatives of the former issue over the past ten years: 1. Ex: Central States Signature Sale (Heritage, 4/2001), lot 7844, where it realized $10,935. Certified by NGC. 2. Ex: Santa Clara Signature Sale (Heritage, 11/2002), lot 7705, where it realized $7,504. A PCGS-certified example. 3. The present example, prior pedigree unknown.NGC and PCGS combined report just four 1883-S Eagles at the MS63 level with a lone MS66 PCGS example finer (10/02).
