1883 S$1 PR67 NGC. The mint struck 1,039 Morgan dollar
1883 S$1 PR67 NGC. The mint struck 1,039 Morgan dollar proofs in 1883. NGC and PCGS combined have certified approximately 450 examples to date (some of which are undoubtedly resubmissions), the majority which fall between PR62 and PR64. David Bowers, in his Silver Dollars and Trade Dollars of the United States, says that: "Many of the 1,039 Proofs have been cleaned, a situation common to most of the earlier Proof dates in the Morgan series. At the time, it was considered permissible to lightly clean Proofs to maintain their brilliance."
Whispers of golden-tan, lavender, and cobalt-blue hug the rims of the Superb Gem proof in this lot, and the motifs are highlighted against the deeply mirrored fields. Exquisite detail stands out on the design elements, including sharp delineation in the hair at Liberty's ear, and the eagle's breast feathers. Close inspection with a glass reveals well cared for, original surfaces. Indeed, Liberty's cheek and neck are remarkably clean. Census: 13 in 67, 1 finer (4/07).

Shipping: Coins & Currency (view shipping information)
