<B>1883 S$1 PR65 NGC.</B></I> Walter Breen (1977) says of the 1883 proof dollars: "Some of the surviving proofs are badly cleaned, many are nicked and scratched, suggesting that on this date (as on others through the early and middle 1890s) some of the proofs were spent during the panic of 1893." The Gem offered in this lot is an obvious exception to Breen's comments. The iridescent multicolored surfaces are nicely preserved for the grade designation; Liberty's cheek is nearly as clean as the day the coin came off the press. Exquisite definition is noted on all of the design elements.
