1883-S$1 MS65 PCGS. For the first half-decade of Morgan silver dollar production, issues from the San Francisco Mint were struck in large quantities, and remain common, even today. This was about to change, and later issues, while often with large mintages, are not nearly the common date issues of early years. It seems that large quantities of those dollars issued from 1878 through 1882 were transported from San Francisco to the Treasury in Washington, D.C., where they remained for several decades. Those dollars struck in San Francisco, beginning in 1883, were often still large mintage issues, but most entered circulation. Mint State examples of most issues are now considered scarce or rare. Fully Mint State examples of this issue are rare, and Gem quality coins are virtually non-existent.
This example is sharply struck with just a slight weakening of the hair strands over the ear. All other design elements are boldly defined. The devices are frosty and lustrous with bright silver color. The fields are slightly reflective, typical of earlier issues from this Mint. In fact, a glance at the reverse might prompt someone to speculate that this is an 1880 or 1881-S issue, but certainly not an '83-S. The borders have a trace of pale golden toning. This Gem example is approaching the finest certified by PCGS. Population: 13 in 65, 3 finer (1/05).
From The Dr. Volker Dube Collection. Lot:7231
