1883-S $1 MS65 NGC. The 1883-S dollar comes from a mintage of 6.25 million pieces, and is difficult to locate, especially in the higher levels of Mint State. Moreover, bagmarks tend to be a significant problem with these coins, as they were apparently stored and handled roughly (David Bowers, A Guide Book of Morgan Silver Dollars).
This Gem example displays pleasing luster, and occasional splashes of purple, cobalt-blue, and golden-brown patina, which is slightly more prevalent on the obverse. An attentive strike leaves sharp definition on the design elements, including the hair over Liberty's ear and the eagle's breast feathers. Well preserved surfaces reveal just a few grade-consistent marks. Census: 15 in 65, 3 finer (1/08).

Coin Engraver: George T.
