The New Orleans Mint dollars are characterized by generally weak strikes, often lacking detail above Liberty's ear and on the eagle's breast. This example is an exception to that rule, and possesses exceptional detail in both of those locations, as well as everywhere else. Although the strike is not completely full, it is far stronger than usually seen. The frosty surfaces have exquisite silver luster without any evidence of toning. Perhaps Dave Bowers was considering this coin when he said: "Cherrypicking is definitely recommended, this making all the difference between your high-quality collection and the ordinary quality of most others." While many collectors prefer coins with toning, others much prefer those that are brilliant with silvery-white surfaces. For the latter collector, we suggest that this coin should be given a high degree of consideration for its overall aesthetic appeal. It is also tied for the finest frosty and lustrous example certified by PCGS. Population: 28 in 67, 0 finer (1/05).
From The Dr. Volker Dube Collection. Lot:7230
