1883 Morgan $1 NGC PF66 CAM
1883 Morgan Dollar. NGC graded PF66 CAM. Beautiful swirls of silvery iridescence confirm the originality of this cameo-frosted example. Fully lustrous, deeply mirrored, with only a few wispy hairlines visible under magnification, and quite clean for the issue. The dies left their rigid impression behind without the least weakness or imprecision.

Regular issue silver dollars required a strike-pressure of at least 160 tons to the square inch. It is not recorded how much extra force was imparted to the planchets that struck Proofs, but what is well known is that Proofs were struck on the slower-operating medal press at Philadelphia. Each coin was given two blows by the dies -- instead of one, as on the regular coins -- and the dies were carefully polished. The die maker frosted the recessed areas where the imprint of the design would transfer this frost to the cameo devices on the struck coin.
