1883-CC $20 AU53 PCGS. The Philadelphia Mint only prod
1883-CC<$20> AU53 PCGS. The Philadelphia Mint only produced proof double eagles in 1883, preferring to concentrate on lower denomination gold coins. In Carson City, just under 60,000 double eagles were coined, and the mintage in San Francisco totaled well over 1 million coins. By this time, the Comstock Lode yielded more of its product than the previous couple years, and much of the metal was deposited at the Carson City Mint. Much of the gold that was deposited at the Mint was coined into double eagles, the easiest denomination to produce. After they were coined, these pieces failed to circulate on an active basis, and were usually sealed in canvas bags. It was there that most known examples became abraded as the bags were moved back and forth. This example is a fully lustrous double eagle with brilliant medium yellow-gold color and hints of ebony toning on the highpoints. A few light scuffs and abrasions are evident on the obverse only. The reverse is exquisite. Encapsulated in a green label holder.
From The Wyoming Collection.
