1883 5C No Cents PR67 PCGS. This coin was previously offered as lot 6578 in our January 2001 sale of the Richard Allen Collection, where it was described as: "Charles E. Barber's initial Liberty Head Nickel design did not include the word CENTS on the reverse as part of the denomination. The Mint recognized the folly of this omission before the end of 1883, and CENTS was duly added along the lower reverse periphery. At least seven different obverse dies were used to produce 5,219 1883 No Cents proofs, and the present variety with a normal date and the 1 close to the bust is the most common. This coin possesses superior eye appeal for this often dull, spotted, and/or impaired issue. The fields are bright at all angles with soft lilac-gray iridescence and bisecting swaths of golden-tan patina on both sides. Every feature is fully struck, and the smooth surfaces are indicative of the grade." The coin, which is still housed in the same first generation PCGS holder, brought $7,590 in that sale.
