1883 5C No Cents MS67 PCGS. On January 8, 1883, the Philadelphia Mint began production of Charles Barber's Liberty Nickel. To increase striking sharpness and prolong working die life, Superintendent of the Mint Archibald Loudon Snowden increased the size of this denomination from 20.5 millimeters on the Shield type to 21.2 millimeters on the Liberty type. This seems to have worked, but the Mint made a different error with the Liberty Nickel. The initial design lacked the word CENTS on the reverse as part of the denomination, an omission that led to confusion and fraud among certain elements of the general public. Around the middle of this year, the reverse was redesigned to include the word CENTS, a change that led to widespread hoarding of the initial "CENT-less" type. Today, the 1883 No Cents Nickel is readily obtainable in all grades, well, at least those below the Superb Gem threshold. In MS67, only 29 coins are known to NGC and PCGS, and they are unsurpassed at either service (7/02). This is a bright, beautiful representative with a glowing, satiny sheen. The razor sharp strike includes full definition on the often troublesome left ear of corn in the reverse wreath. Both sides are untoned and virtually blemish-free with a few small die cracks (as produced) around the obverse periphery.
