1883<50C> PR66 PCGS. The Philadelphia Mint was the only coinage facility that produced half dollars in 1883, and a minuscule total of 9,039 pieces (including proofs) were struck. A high grade survivor of the proof issue (1,039 pieces), this is a lovely coin with creamy surfaces that show somewhat reflective fields and obverse peripheral shades of smoky-golden. The reverse is more deeply toned with smoky-gray and sea-green colorations. Every detail shows a bold effect and there are no readily seen marks anywhere on this beautiful coin. The population statistics confirm the scarcity of this proof coin in Gem Mint State. PCGS has certified a mere eight pieces in PR66; only one has been graded finer (6/06).
