1883<3CN> PR68 Cameo NGC. The year 1883 saw four "nickel" coin varieties produced for circulation: the nickel three cent piece, the 1883 Shield five cent nickel, and the Liberty With Cents and No Cents nickels. The key-date 1883 three cent issue is in demand both as a proof and a business strike, because of the skimpy mintage of 4,000 circulation strikes, offset by, apparently, 6,609 proof coins, according to the Guide Book and Walter Breen's proof Encyclopedia. There were undoubtedly considerable proofs minted, given the more than 2,600 examples certified between NGC and PCGS combined. This particular example, however, is tied with two other pieces for the finest Cameo proof of the issue graded at either service. The silver-gray surfaces are essentially pristine, with heavy frost on the devices and only the most minute evidence of contact. Deep field reflectivity is seen on both sides, and wispy die cracks join the wreath to the rim at 3, 6, and 10 o'clock. A spectacular piece destined for a fine type or date set.
