1883 $3 PR66 Deep Cameo PCGS. This date is a well known rarity to collectors of three dollar gold pieces. Only 900 business strikes were produced in addition to 89 proofs. As one might imagine from such a small mintage of business strikes, early business strikes display considerable prooflikeness in the fields. In the past, there was some confusion between these first-strike business strikes and proofs. However, today diagnostics of each are known. On proofs, the tips of the wreath are clearly separated, while on business strikes they are joined. Also, on proofs the date appears to slant down with the 3 lower than the other digits in the date. On business strikes, the date is level.
While we have offered a number of proofs of this date over the years, and even a few Cameo examples, we have only offered four other Deep Cameo coins at public auction--a PR64, two PR65, and two PR66 coins. The surfaces are almost perfectly preserved. The fields are deeply reflective and show the often-seen "orange peel" effect seen on some proof gold from the 1870s through the 1890s. As expected, the devices are heavily frosted and show a strong two-toned contrast. The surfaces overall display a rich, even reddish patina that adds considerably to this coin's already considerable visual appeal. An outstanding proof example and one of the technically finest as well as most visually appealing coins extant from this low mintage issue. Population: 8 in 66 Deep Cameo, 0 finer (3/07).
From The Palakika Collection.

Shipping: Coins & Currency (view shipping information)
