1883 $3 PR65 Ultra Cameo NGC. Regardless of date, proof three dollar gold pieces are rare coins. Just 89 proofs were struck in 1883, and less than half of these still survive today, probably about 30 pieces. Writing in the Pittman catalog, David Akers placed the number of survivors at between 35 and 40 coins, although this estimate may be a little high. In addition to the Pittman Collection, examples also appeared in the Eliasberg, Trompeter, Bass, Garrett, and Bareford sales, as well as a single piece in the Smithsonian Institution. According to our notes, this is just the 21st appearance of this date in any Heritage sale dating back to 1975, including multiple appearances of a smaller number of coins. Nearly all of those known today are in lower numerical grades. This rich yellow-gold Gem has hints of honey-gold color with deeply reflective fields around highly lustrous devices. A few tiny toning spots are visible with careful examination. Although plate matching is difficult, this example appears to be different than any of those pieces mentioned above.

Shipping: Coin/Currency (view shipping information)
