1883 25C PR68 NGC. Ex: P. Kaufman. Briggs 1-A. The Philadelphia Mint used only one reverse die (Briggs A) to deliver 14,400 business strike and 1,039 proof Seated Quarters in 1883. Examples of these two deliveries, however, are easily distinguishable by the obverse die. All proofs, the present specimen included, were struck from a blundered die with the tops of an errant 83 in the denticles below the digits 88 in the date. This original Superb Gem was expertly preserved from the time of issue. The obverse is awash in generally even charcoal-gray color with whispers of lilac and cobalt-blue iridescence that are only really evident at direct angles. The left reverse is deeply toned, but the right side is brighter with scintillating reddish-orange iridescence. There is not a single noticeable handling mark, and the devices are fully brought up over all features. The 1883 is one of several low mintages dates at the end of this series whose popularity is unflagging among collectors who specialize in Seated Liberty coinage. While proofs are relatively available in an absolute sense, survivors typically grade no finer than PR65. At the present level, this coin is matched by one coin and surpassed by only one other, but of which are at NGC (10/02).From the Philip Kaufman Collection.
