1883 $2 1/2 MS64 PCGS. Throughout the 1880s, quarter eagle mintages were low as the Mint concentrated on Morgan dollars. Just 1,920 business strike quarter eagles were minted along with 82 proofs. Examples are rare in all grades. Like nearly all survivors, this piece has fully mirrored and deeply reflective surfaces with sharp design features. It is clearly a business strike example, although it would not be hard to imagined the coin being described as a proof by some past cataloger. This lovely piece with its brilliant yellow-gold luster has prominent clash marks in the fields, and they are especially heavy on the reverse.
