1883 10C Hawaii Ten Cents MS66 PCGS. Hawaii's second elected ruler, King David Kalakaua came to the throne in 1874 after the premature death of King William Lunalilo. Kalakaua is responsible for revitalizing Hawaiian culture, suppressed for decades by Christian missionaries, for building Iolani Palace, and, in an effort to promote his kingdom in America, Europe, and the Far East, became the first monarch to circumnavigate the globe. His many accomplishments were countered, however, by at least as many missteps. While not seen as a mistake by the thousands of collectors of Hawaiian coins today, overzealous production of silver coins in 1883 was a disaster for the already depleted Hawaiian treasury. Palaces, coronations, royal yachts, and lavish parties didn't come cheap in the 1880s and had already threatened to bankrupt the island nation. The Hawaiian dime is second in rarity only to the Hawaiian dollar among the regular 1883 issues. The typical survivor is well worn and often cleaned. Only occasionally is an attractive Mint State coin located and true Gems are of the utmost rarity. At the MS66 level, Heritage has only had the privilege to offer one such example, that being in our August, 2006 Denver Sale where a similarly certified piece realized $19,550. This example representative boasts shimmering, unmarked surfaces that are lightly framed in golden toning, with a touch of blue-green color also noted about the reverse periphery. Population: 8 in 66, 0 finer (11/06).

Shipping: Coin/Currency (view shipping information)
