1883 $1 Hawaii Dollar MS65 PCGS. Prior to Chief Engraver Charles E. Barber's creation of dies and hubs for Hawaiian silver coinage dated 1883 (and the subsequent production of the dime, eighth dollar, quarter, and silver dollar) the Kingdom of Hawaii had little knowledge of legitimate circulating coinage. True, King Kamehameha III introduced a currency system to the islands in 1846, but the lone shipment of hapa hanele was met with such disdain by the locals for its lackluster appearance that "that many...threw them into the ocean rather than accept them as payment" (Breen, 1988). A major auction house might handle quite a few pieces from each of the smaller denominations in any given year, but it is unusual to find a silver dollar so well preserved. Delicate shades of apricot and cobalt-blue color are draped over both sides of this piece, and one will note deep, satiny mint luster as the coin rotates under a lamp. The eye is unable to locate a single detracting abrasion and the strike is sharp throughout. Ranked near the pinnacle of the PCGS Population Report, this example is surely destined for a premier collection. Population: 8 in 65, 5 finer (1/08).

Shipping: Coins & Currency (view shipping information)
