1882 United States Mint Employees, William Penn, these m
1882 United States Mint Employees, William Penn. These medals were distributed to employees of the U.S. Mint during the celebration of the Bicentennial of Pennsylvania, in 1882. The majority of these were struck in brass and white metal. There are three known in gold and approximately 100 pieces struck in silver, as listed in the Julian catalog. The example offered here is a Gem frosted Cameo proof, and the first that we have seen. The Standard Catalog of U.S. Tokens 1700-1900 by Rulau lists it on page 690 as "PA-Ph, 393-B." This rare medal should draw plenty of attention from collectors around the country.
