1882<T$1> PR66 NGC. Toned with a bonanza of gold, teal and russet on the obverse and reverse, with seductive gunmetal-gray predominating until a examined under a light which brings alive the colors. The surfaces show a few minor hairlines beneath the dizzying array of color. Identifiable by a tiny lint mark in the field that resembles a question mark which floats unexpectedly in the field above Liberty's knee.
The Trade dollar didn't catch on all that well overseas as had been hoped by Congress, and this design was retired from circulation after 1878 when the Morgan silver dollar coinage began in earnest. By 1879 only Proof Trade dollars were being struck for collectors, and the numbers and demand slowed until 1884 when official production apparently dwindled to a mere 10 coins, with another 5 struck during the late hours of the night in 1885. When this 1882 was struck, a total of 1,097 were coined, this apparently amongst the finer of the certified examples. Census: 35 in 66, 8 finer (11/05).
