1882$1> PR68 Cameo NGC. In 1882, the Philadelphia Mint produced some 1,100 proof Morgan dollars for sale to collectors, either individually or in combination with other denominations. Highly desirable with fully brilliant silver surfaces on both sides, exhibiting exceptional cameo contrast between the lustrous devices and mirrored fields. The grade awarded by NGC is a result of pristine surfaces and a virtually complete lack of contact marks and hairlines. Each side has extraordinary design definition. Every individual hair strand on the obverse is completely defined, even including those immediately above the ear. Wheat, corn, cotton bolls, and tobacco leaves above the coronet are all in full bloom. The reverse is equally well detailed with all wing, breast, and neck feathers individually developed. The eagle's claws, tail feathers, and the wreath below are fully defined as well.
This amazing example defies the words of Dave Bowers in the Morgan Dollar Red Book: "Another good vintage year for Proofs--what with excellent strike and deep cameo contrast being the rule. Still, the majority have been cleaned--and those deep mirror fields make hairlines pop out at you." This is an elusive issue, and the present example is equaled by only one other example in all of our auctions since 1993 and the beginning of our Permanent Auction Archives. It may be appropriate to mention that these archives, available to all who have internet access, now have more than 1 million numismatic items listed and offered by us during the last 14 years, for an average of more than 70,000 items per year.
