For your consideration is a framed engraving of an 1882 Grand Army of The Republic Military Certificate done by Joseph A. Joel circa 1882-1889. Joseph A. Joel (1842-1906) was born in 1842 in England. His family moved to America while he was still young. At age 19, he enlisted in Company F, 23rd Ohio Infantry in 1861, and then transferred to Company A in 1862. Joseph passed away in 1906 in New York. The military certificate engraving is decorated with several vignettes depicting army and naval battle scenes, soldiers and sailors, and a pair of deathbed scenes at the bottom. The top center shows the Goddess Columbia with a bald eagle, American flags and a Union shield with the Laurel wreath. There is a G.A.R. bade with a flag and wreath at the bottom and center.
