1882-CC $20 MS62 PCGS. The 1882-CC double eagle was the first twenty dollar gold issue made at the Carson City Mint since 1879. The two-year suspension is attributed to two unrelated factors. The local cause was a reduction in Comstock Lode ore, as silver yields were all but expended, in turn causing temporary coinage suspensions at the local Mint. In 1882 floodwaters deluged the rich lower portions of the mine, effectively rendering Virginia City a tourist attraction. On the national scene, the U.S. Treasury began decreasing double eagle output (mostly visible in the P-mint emissions from the next few years), in the process of implementing a new policy to expand the distribution of half eagles and eagles. These coordinating influences resulted in a paltry double eagle mintage of only 39,140 pieces of the 1882-CC. This example offers lovely orange-gold surfaces, with the reverse fairly prooflike (and a small alloy spot), while the obverse shows only moderate contrast. The few light abrasions are less than might be expected, and the eye appeal is extremely high.
