1882-CC<$20> AU55 PCGS. In 1880 and 1881, the primary duty of the Carson City Mint was the production of silver dollars, and the majority of those coins were stored for decades in the treasury vaults, finally being released almost a century later via the GSA dollar sales. Meanwhile, there were no double eagles coined in Nevada during either of these years, and 39,140 pieces coined in 1882 was the next issue of the denomination. Estimates of the population surviving today have ranged from 800 to 1,500 coins, depending on the researcher. Nearly all known examples grade in the XF to AU range with only a few dozen Mint State pieces left. This example is a sharply struck specimen with frosty medium yellow surfaces and traces of light rose toning. Both sides are moderately abraded as almost always encountered. In fact, the typical example has still heavier abrasions than those seen on this piece. A few dark stains are seen on the reverse, but these are of little consequence.
