1882-CC $10 AU55 NGC. Misplaced Date. Winter 2-A. This variety was first discovered by John Kraljevich, Jr. on September 29, 2000, and it was first publicized in Bowers and Merena's November 2000 catalog for Part IV of the Harry W. Bass, Jr. Collection. Identifiable by remnants of two misplaced 8s in the denticles below and left of the 88 in the date. While Winter and Halperin (2001) suggest that this variety may be an earlier die state of the Winter 1-A 1882-CC Eagle, additional research is required before any conclusions can be drawn. This is not the Bass specimen, but it is a desirable Choice AU representative with ample remnants of a modest semi-prooflike finish. Both sides are well struck with overall bold definition and few singularly noticeable abrasions. A tiny reverse spot between the TA in STATES is noted as a pedigree marker. The 1882-CC was produced to the extent of only 6,764 pieces. With only 125-150 coins believed extant in all grades (again, per Winter and Halperin), this issue is tied with the 1884-CC for top rarity honors among Carson City Eagles from the 1880s.From the Ashland City Collection.
