1882 50C Shield Earring Half Dollar, Judd-1700,
1882 50C Shield Earring Half Dollar, Judd-1700, Pollock-1902, R.6-7, PR61 PCGS. The middle denomination of the famous Shield Earring pattern issues designed by George Morgan, the rarest of the "name" patterns struck during the heyday of late nineteenth century prototype production. The obverse depicts a youthful Liberty facing right, her hair constricted in the back by a band inscribed LIBERTY and her choice in jewelry responsible for the "Shield Earring" name. On the reverse, an eagle appears combative and ready for flight. Struck in silver with a reeded edge. This design is generally considered to be one of the most beautiful ever made by the U.S. Mint. Ten or eleven examples are known of this design and in silver with a reeded edge. A few light contact marks are seen on each side and there is a suggestion of a long-ago cleaning, but the surfaces have largely retoned with scattered smoky-gray and golden toning over much of each side, and deep blue around the margins. Deeply reflective proof fields.Ex: The New York Sale (NERCA, 3/77), lot 1005, where it brought $1,600; A.J. Amato (NERCA, 7/78), lot 1189.From the Frank O. Fredericks Collection, Part III.
