1882 50C PR68 Cameo NGC. Ex: P. Kaufman. WB-102. The tops of two errant 8s are evident in the denticles below the date--the diagnostic feature of this variety. Wiley and Bugert (1993) suggest that this die was only used to strike proofs of this date. To date (7/02), there are just three 1882 Seated Halves graded PR68 by NGC, and this is the only example designated Cameo. An ice-white Superb Gem, there is no mentionable toning on either side. Illimitable depth of reflectivity in the fields forms a splendid backdrop to the frosty textured, powerfully impressed devices. Both sides are so smooth as to preclude identification of even a single pedigree marker. Just 4,400 business strike and 1,100 proof Seated Half Dollars were struck in 1882, and survivors of both deliveries have long been prized by specialists. From the Philip Kaufman Collection.
