1882 $3 PR64 Cameo NGC. Low mintages are hardly headline news in the three dollar gold series. The 1882, though, is noteworthy as only 1,500 pieces were struck for circulation, plus another 76 in proof format. A rather high number of proofs seem to have survived with estimates in the range of 40 to 50 pieces remaining in various states of preservation.
The striking sequence of the 1882 proof is important to help understand why a given coin has the finish it does. All proofs were struck in the Medal Department, and in this year they were produced in six separate batches. Early in the year the J and L on the truncation of the neck are mostly complete. Later they fade. These earlier strikings are mostly frosted impressions. Later in the year, the dies were repolished. This thinned the leaf left of the date. These pieces are again mostly frosted (this is the die state of this coin). Then later impressions have the leaf incomplete.
This is a high-end PR64 that has the often-seen orange-peel finish in the fields. The devices are noticeably frosted and present strong cameo contrast against the depth of mirrored reflectivity on each side. Census: 6 in 64, 7 finer (7/07).

Shipping: Coins & Currency (view shipping information\)
