1881 T$1 PR67 Cameo NGC. A total of 960 coins were struck of the 1881 proof-only Trade dollar. In David Bowers' discussion of this issue in his Silver Dollars and Trade Dollars of the United States, he speculates on its sales distribution: "...I estimate that about half of these went to individual numismatists, some of who ordered a duplicate or two; most of the remaining half went to dealers such as J.W. Scott (in particular), Ebenezer Mason, Jr., and others who had a wide trade. Inevitably, a few went to non-collectors who were casually interested in coins, some of whom ordered coins for anniversaries, holidays, or special events; such orders probably amounted to fewer that 50 coins." Bowers further comments on the "poor workmanship' of these coins: "Most of the proofs of this year were poorly struck and exhibit flatness in areas, particularly on the head of Miss Liberty and on the upper stars. This was due to incorrect die setting in the press. Poor striking continued to be a problem into 1883."
A fair number of this issue have survived, as indicated by the approximately 600 pieces that have been certified by NGC and PCGS combined. Only about 140 or so examples have been assigned the Cameo designation, most of which are in Premium Gem and below. Only 10 PR67 Cameo specimens have been seen, and a mere three finer (10/06).
The Superb Gem in this lot certainly exceeds the quality of the typical 1881 proof example. The strike is impressive throughout the design elements, including excellent detail on Liberty's head and on the upper stars, areas that are usually flat. Essentially untoned surfaces are impeccably preserved; a tiny mark on Liberty's left (right facing) elbow will help to pedigree the coin. This piece displays outstanding quality in all respects.

Shipping: Coin/Currency (view shipping information)
