1881 T$1 PR66 PCGS. The Philadelphia Mint's delivery of Trade Dollars dipped to 960 coins in 1881 after a record high of 1,987 pieces in 1880. Both years saw the production of only proofs. Two reverse die varieties are known for the proof 1881, the present coin having been struck from the die that displays minute doubling on 420 GRAINS. Fortunately for our bidders, coins of this die marriage are more sharply struck than those of the other variety. The present Gem is no exception, and every design element is full with a razor sharp appearance. The finish is moderately contrasted with fields that glow with deep reflectivity beneath mottled olive-gold patination. The 1881 is not particularly rare as a date, but coins whose surfaces are as smooth as those of the present specimen are scarce and always in demand among advanced specialists.
