1881-S S$1 MS68 Deep Mirror Prooflike PCGS. Ex: Jack Lee. The 1881-S has long been recognized as the most ubiquitous issue in the Morgan dollar series. In his Encyclopedia of silver dollars (1993), Bower's estimate of the surviving population, in Mint State grades, was between 4 and 6.25 million pieces!
That said, let us consider the number of '81-S dollars that have been certified as MS68 Deep Mirror Prooflike, by the two major grading services: NGC has seen just two such pieces, and PCGS has only found one, in twenty years of activity! (Neither company has graded an example any finer than these three.)
Fully struck and seemingly pristine, this fabulous coin presents an essentially untoned appearance, although some milky patina is noted in the obverse fields. Of the millions that still exist, then, this '81-S gets bragging rights as one of the top three, at least among those that have been encapsulated; and it remains the finest-known example at PCGS more than 14 years after first being sealed into its green label holder.

Shipping: Coins & Currency (view shipping information)
