A little background on the rarity (or rather, lack of rarity) of the 1881-S silver dollar. This has always been a popular issue to collect since it is the commonest year in the series. Even in the 1950s or 1960s, bags of usually marked up '81-S dollars could be bought for only a small premium over face value. Then came the big year 1984, which few know as a "big year" but the grading services remember fondly since they profited handsomely by it. In that year, Continental Illinois Bank went the way of the dodo bird, that it, it went bank-rupt. Found in its vaults were, among other things, approximately 1.1 million silver dollars. That is a lot of silver dollars. What's even more fascinating, most of these were dated 1881-S! Gems all the way down to scruffy BUs were represented, but thousand upon thousands of top end pieces made their way to the grading services that the marked has since been well supplied. Luckily for collectors, 1881-S has some of the flashiest luster seen on any date silver dollar, which compensates for its less than rare standing in the date hierarchy. Why not pick up this coin while you still can. Who knows, maybe in 100 or 1000 years, they'll have disappeared completely.
